Wood as a sustainable energy source
A total of five district heating networks are financed through EBL’s district heating investment vehicle. These are all located in Switzerland and use wood chip combustion to generate heat for the local region. This sustainably reduces CO2 emissions.
Saanen-Gstaad heating plant
Overview
Heat demand, construction: 28 GWh
Customer connected load: 14,800 kW
Chip furnace: 7,400 kW
Oil firing: 7,000 kW
Substitution of heating oil: 3,300,000 litres
CO2 emissions avoided: 8,745 tonnes
Two wood chip boilers and one oil-powered peak load boiler operate as a bivalent system that generates the required amount of energy for heating customers in Saanen-Gstaad. The wood-chip-fired system covers 90–95% of the annual heat requirement. A conventional oil-fired system is used to ensure peak heat demand and security of supply.
Wood is a carbon-neutral energy source. The carbon dioxide (CO2) released by combustion is used together with solar energy to generate new biomass. Using a wood-fired system substitutes wood chips for 3.3 million litres of oil, reducing CO2 emissions by 8,745 tonnes over the long term. Every cubic metre of wood that replaces fossil fuels lowers CO2 emissions by around 200 kg.
